This will be posted on Facebook to kick off the campaign. The technique used to tell a story around the true cost of vandalism will be a form of animated graffiti. The story is linear but the visual technique makes it more interesting and gives it a gritty feel. It allows it to stand out and make it feel authentic – in touch with the streets, where the vandalism takes place.

MUSIC UNDER

We open with a shot that establishes the setting – it’s a township. The camera then pans over an informal settlement, then moves to RDP houses, and then settles on a house there.

We see a woman leave the house and it’s still somewhat dark as she goes to work. She kisses her boyfriend goodbye. She walks over a foot bridge and we then see her at a bus terminus.

We see her sitting in the bus stuck in traffic, and we see that these a traffic jam because robots have been vandalized – they were set alight and can see them smoking still. We see her get off in town, anxiously checking her watch. As she crosses a road, a car nearly knocks her over because the robots are blinking, meaning they aren’t working – we see it’s been vandalized because wires have been pulled out.

Cut to her in the workplace as her boss says she’s late yet again and will have to work overtime that day to make up for it. We see her get into a taxi late at night from town and she’s one of the last passengers to be dropped off.

She makes her way to cross the footbridge. It’s dark, just like it was in the morning, but now we see that a couple of the lamps aren’t on, meaning they have been vandalized. She’s a bit hesitant as we see from her view that it’s dark up ahead. But it’s the only way to get home and she goes forward. As she does so, we see 3 figures – youngsters, about 17, emerging from the shadows. They are wearing beanies and caps. She stops in shock as one of them shouts for her not to run, as he opens an Okapi knife. The screen goes to black. We hear the woman scream in terror.

ANNCR: The cost of vandalism is higher than you think. Vandalised facilities, traffic lights
and street lamps lead to delays, accidents, robberies, and worse. If you’re not a
part of the solution, you’re a part of the problem.
